It's 12:20 a.m. The conversation is good — really good, the best in three weeks. The person on the other side is telling you about their disastrous move to Lisbon, you're laughing, you still have a thousand things to ask. And yet you feel something give way. A faint burning at the corners of your eyelids. An image that doubles for half a second when you glance toward the window. A dull pressure behind your brow.
You type "sorry, I have to go," you close the tab, and you're annoyed with yourself for the next twenty minutes.
It wasn't your motivation that gave out. It was your visual system. And unlike social fatigue or stage fright, this one comes down to perfectly adjustable parameters: a distance, a brightness level, a blink rate, a discipline of breaks. Random video chat is one of the most demanding screen activities there is for your eyes — and almost nobody prepares for it.

Why Video Chat Tires Your Eyes More Than a Netflix Series
For the same amount of time, watching a film and running through video conversations don't cost your visual system the same thing. Three differences explain the gap.
You're staring at a face, not a scene. In front of a film, your gaze sweeps the frame, the shot changes every three seconds, your eyes rest on broad, blurry areas. In video chat, your gaze locks onto a tiny zone: the eyes and mouth of the other person, a few square centimetres at the centre of the screen. The ciliary muscles, which handle accommodation, stay contracted in a near-constant position. That's static contraction — the same mechanism that makes a shoulder ache when you hold your arm up.
You blink far less. This is the best-documented point. The INRS, in its fact sheets on screen work, notes that blink frequency drops from roughly 15 to 20 blinks per minute down to 5 or 7 during a sustained visual task. The tear film no longer renews itself properly, the cornea dries out, and the classic symptoms appear: stinging, a gritty sensation, redness, and paradoxically sometimes reflex watering. In video chat, a social mechanism makes everything worse: we unconsciously hold back from blinking so as not to look absent or evasive. You hold the other person's gaze, so you dry your eyes out.
You're looking at yourself. Most interfaces display your own image in a corner. Your gaze shuttles constantly between two points of attention, at different sizes and contrasts. Each saccade demands a micro-readjustment of focus. Across two hundred "nexts" in an evening, that adds up to thousands of micro-adjustments.
Add to that the typical context — dark room, screen at full brightness, end of the day after eight hours already spent in front of another screen — and you get the perfect cocktail for what ophthalmologists call digital eye strain (or computer vision syndrome).
The Symptoms to Spot Before They Ruin the Evening
Eye strain doesn't hit all at once. It settles in by stages, and each stage has its signs.

The key point: the first three stages are reversible within minutes if you intervene early. Once you've reached the headache stage, no setting will save your evening. That's why prevention beats correction.

The Five Settings That Change Everything
1. Distance and height
The classic INRS recommendation for screen work: an eye-to-screen distance of between 50 and 70 cm, with the top of the screen at eye level or slightly below, so that your gaze is directed downward by about 15 to 20 degrees.
In video chat, we do exactly the opposite: we move our face closer to see better, and on a laptop sitting flat on a desk, we look down with the neck bent — which has the added bonus of filming you from below, the least flattering angle in existence.
A simple adjustable laptop stand solves both problems at once: it raises the screen to eye level, it raises the webcam to face level, and it forces you to sit back a good ten centimetres. It's probably the best benefit-to-price ratio on this entire list. If you use a separate keyboard, the gain is immediate; otherwise, a compact external keyboard becomes necessary for comfortable typing.
2. Screen brightness, matched to the room rather than to habit
The rule is simple and almost nobody applies it: your screen should be roughly as bright as a sheet of white paper placed next to it, under the room's current lighting. If the screen looks like a lamp, it's too bright. If it looks dingy grey, it's too dark.
The trap of late-night video chat is twofold: we leave brightness at daytime levels, and we turn off the room light to "be more discreet." The contrast between screen and surroundings explodes, the pupil yo-yos, and fatigue arrives twice as fast.
3. Room lighting: never in the dark
This point deserves repeating, because it clashes with a natural reflex. Never chat in complete darkness. You need soft, indirect ambient lighting, placed behind you or to your side — definitely not facing the screen, where it would create reflections.
The ideal setup serves two functions: reducing the screen/room contrast, and lighting your face for the camera. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness and colour temperature does both, as long as you aim it at a light-coloured wall rather than directly at yourself. Set it to a warm tone (around 3000 K) in the evening: it's more comfortable for the eye and far more flattering on camera than the cold white of a waiting room.
Some people prefer an LED light strip placed behind the screen, which softens the halo without lighting your face. It's an elegant solution for late sessions, and it costs less than a video light panel.
4. Text and image size
If you're squinting, you've already lost. Increase your computer's system scaling (125% or 150% depending on your screen resolution) rather than moving your head closer. And if the chat window offers a full-screen display, use it: a larger image at a normal distance is infinitely more restful than a small image thirty centimetres from your face.
5. Your glasses, if you wear them
Standard progressive lenses are optimised for reading at 40 cm and for distance vision, not for the 60 cm of a screen. Many progressive wearers compensate by lifting their chin for hours — hence the associated neck pain. There are lenses known as "near-vision" or "office" lenses, prescribed specifically for that intermediate distance. That's a conversation to have with your ophthalmologist rather than a purchase to make on your own.
The 20-20-20 Rule: The Only Protocol That Survives an Evening
Popularised by ergonomists and echoed by most public health sources on screen work, the rule is devastatingly simple: every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
The physiological benefit is twofold: the ciliary muscle relaxes completely for distance vision, and the change of task mechanically restarts blinking.
The problem, obviously, is that you're not going to interrupt a good conversation every twenty minutes to stare at a building. Here's how to adapt it to random video chat:
- Use the transitions. Between two strangers, there are always two to five seconds of loading. Don't spend them staring at an empty screen: look at the window, the far side of the room, the door. Five transitions are worth one break.
- Anchor a long break to the clock. Every hour, five minutes standing, away from the screen, lights on. A kitchen timer sitting on your desk works better than a phone alarm, because it doesn't send you back to another screen.
- Blink deliberately. Three firm blinks, eyelids fully closed, every five minutes. It looks ridiculous; it's what works best against dryness.

The best anti-fatigue setting isn't an accessory: it's a deliberate ninety-minute session instead of a four-hour one you simply endure. Third-hour conversations are almost always worse than first-hour ones.
Blue Light, Filters and Glasses: What Can Reasonably Be Said
The market for blue-light glasses is booming, and the marketing claims go well beyond what the data supports.
What is established: blue light in the evening shifts melatonin secretion and delays falling asleep. That's a well-documented chronobiological effect. For late-night video chat use, it matters: after two hours of screen time at midnight, don't be surprised if it takes a long time to fall asleep.
What is far less established: the idea that a screen's blue light damages the retina or is the main cause of eye strain. ANSES, in its work on the health effects of LEDs, concluded that there is a real phototoxic risk from very intense, blue-rich sources, but computer and smartphone screens sit at exposure levels far below those that cause problems. Several clinical reviews have also failed to show any significant benefit from filtering lenses on eye strain symptoms compared with neutral lenses.
Practical conclusion:
- For sleep, turn on your system's built-in night mode (Night Shift, Night Light) and lower brightness after 10 p.m. It's free and effective.
- For eye comfort, a pair of blue-light filtering glasses may suit you subjectively — many users find them restful — but don't count on them to offset badly set brightness, a pitch-dark room or three hours without a break.
- In cases of marked dryness, preservative-free artificial tears in single-dose vials bring immediate relief with no risk. For repeated use, ask your pharmacist for advice: formulations differ depending on whether you have an aqueous or a lipid deficiency.
The Hidden Benefit: Rested Eyes Show On Screen
There's one argument that has nothing to do with health and yet should convince even the most indifferent.
Tired eyes are immediately readable on a webcam. Heavy eyelids, poor blinking, micro-squints of concentration, head tilted slightly forward: the person opposite doesn't think "his eyes hurt." They think "he's bored," "he wants to leave," "he's not really here." And they hit "next."
The eyes are the first thing we decode in someone on video, even before the voice. A dry, red, squinting eye sends exactly the opposite signal to the one you want to send. Conversely, a clear, mobile gaze that blinks normally reads as attention and presence — which is to say, as charisma.
Put another way: the twenty minutes of breaks you refuse to take probably cost you more conversations than they gain you.
The Protocol for a Comfortable Evening, in Summary
- Before — Screen brightness matched to the room. Ambient lamp on, aimed at a wall. Screen at 60 cm, top of the frame at eye level. Water bottle within reach.
- During — Look into the distance at every transition between strangers. Three firm blinks every five minutes. Five-minute standing break every hour.

- At the first headache — Stop. No conversation is worth tomorrow's migraine.

- If it persists — Book an appointment with an ophthalmologist. Unusual eye strain is often the first symptom of an uncorrected refractive error, not a screen problem.
None of this costs much, and almost none of it takes time. But the cumulative effect is spectacular: the same evening, with the same strangers, can end at 1 a.m. in a good mood or at 11:30 p.m. with a cold compress on your forehead. The difference comes down to one lamp switched on, a screen raised ten centimetres, and a handful of deliberate blinks.
